Vaginoplasty: Before and After

Childbirth can cause changes to the sensation a woman and her partner feel during sex. Labor can push the pelvic muscles out of place, increasing the width of a woman’s vagina to the point where being intimate feels different or not as pleasurable as it did before. Aging and genetics may also result in a woman having a wider vaginal canal and opening.

Vaginoplasty is a common and effective surgery that decreases the diameter of the vagina. Dr. Brady has performed this procedure for thousands of patients, helping women in Dallas recapture the sensation of intimacy. She frequently combines vaginoplasty with surgical techniques to resolve incontinence, which is a frequent side effect of childbirth.

Bring Back Pleasure, Comfort, and Control with One Procedure

Vaginoplasty is for any healthy woman who has a moderately to extremely wide vagina and who wants to tighten this area of her body. While around 90%of the patients we see seek treatment as the result of vaginal childbirth, we help many women who have delivered through C-section or who do not have children. An aging body and heredity can also lead to a wider vagina.

Patients choose to have vaginoplasty with Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas for several important reasons.

A better sex life.

With a single surgery, women can restore the sensitivity and friction that they and their partner enjoyed before. The degree of tightening they will experience will be based on extensive consultation with Dr. Brady. Typically, the procedure returns them to the tightness they had after having intercourse for the first time but after childbirth.

Improved comfort.

When the diameter of the vaginal canal and opening have increased, women may find that tampons do not stay in place, that their vagina makes unwanted noises during sex and other physical activities, and that they have decreased tone and a feeling of looseness. Vaginoplasty can correct these issues.

Return to dating.

A woman who is re-entering the dating pool at a later stage of life may want to get back the confidence she had before her body changed. Vaginoplasty can let her feel more youthful and open to intimacy with a new partner.

Better control over uri nation and bowel movements.

Incontinence can be a major struggle for women after childbirth. Bladder and rectal prolapse can prevent them from having normal urination and bowel movements. Dr. Brady can fix pelvic organ prolapse at the same time as a vaginoplasty, and the procedure may be covered by the patient’s insurer.

What to Expect with Vaginoplasty

Before having a vaginoplasty, patients will come to Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas for a pre-operative appointment. Our staff will answer any additional questions that they have and send them home with prescriptions and resources to promote a comfortable recovery. Out-of-town patient scan schedule their visits with the practice in a way that minimizes travel.

Patients will have their procedure at a Dallas-area surgical center, typically under general anesthesia. The surgery will usually last1hour. During vaginoplasty, Dr. Brady will:

  • Bring the underlying pelvic floor muscles back into position.
  • Tighten both the vaginal canal and vaginal opening.
  • Close the surgery with dissolvable stitches that should go away within 4-6 weeks.

Depending on a patient’s needs, Dr. Brady may also address bladder and rectal prolapse as part of the procedure. Resolving these problems can significantly improve a woman’s comfort and the normal functioning of her pelvic organs.

Recovery After Vaginoplasty

Because vaginoplasty is an internal surgery that affects the muscles, patients will need time to recuperate from their procedure. Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas will provide them with several medications to improve their comfort during this process. This includes medicine to limit muscle spasms in the pelvic and rectal area, which are the most common side effect.

Additionally, we will ask patients to lift nothing heavier than 10 pounds until they receive medical clearance. Women who have vaginoplasty will wear a catheter for 3-4 days to drain their urine, after which point, they will return to our office to have the catheter removed. Altogether, patients can expect 1-2 weeks away from work and normal activities.

Local patients will return to Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas for three-week and six-week appointments. Out-of-town patients may be able to have the three-week appointment by phone or video chat. At six weeks, Dr. Brady will talk with patients about the steps they can take to get the most from their surgery. Common advice she will share includes:

  • Doing special stretching exercises before becoming sexually active again.
  • Massaging estrogen cream into the vagina to soften the surgical site and to dilate the blood vessels.
  • Reintroducing intercourse slowly at first. It is normal for penetration to be difficult the first time after vaginoplasty, and it may take up to six weeks of intercourse before tenderness from surgery completely dissolves.

Dr. Brady and our staff will support patients at every step in their experience with our practice. Working together, we can help them regain the comfort, sensitivity, and control that they enjoyed before.
