Anal Skin Tag Removal in Dallas, TX

Living with anal skin tags can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. These small growths can cause itching and irritation and even make it difficult to maintain proper hygiene. They can also impact your confidence and make daily life less enjoyable.

At the Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas, board-certified gynecologic surgeon Dr. Wesley Anne Brady has nearly twenty years of experience in cosmetic gynecology and treating sensitive health concerns. What Are Anal Skin Tags?

Anal skin tags are common, benign bumps surrounding the anus. They form when a blood vessel swells, stretching the skin, and then shrinks back to its original size. The skin is left dangling, which may cause uncomfortable symptoms like itching and irritation.

While not dangerous, many people choose to have anal skin tags removed for comfort or aesthetic reasons.

Anal Skin Tag Removal

When you arrive for the procedure, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable and apply local anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain during the process.

Once you're numb, the doctor may use a small scalpel or surgical scissors to carefully remove the skin tag. Some patients may have their skin tags removed with a laser, depending on the size and location.

The removal usually takes only a few minutes, and you won’t feel anything beyond some light pressure.

Afterward, we will clean the area and apply an occlusive ointment it for protection while it heals. We’ll give you instructions on how to care for the area at home, and you’ll be able to leave the office shortly after the procedure.

Recovery After Removal

You may have some mild discomfort afterward but should be able to get back to your normal routine the following day. Avoid heavy exercise and stay hydrated to prevent constipation. Stool softeners are also recommended to decrease the risk of constipation after your procedure.

Over the next six weeks, your body will heal, and you'll notice relief from the itching or irritation you may have been dealing with. Plus, many patients feel more confident and comfortable once the tags are gone.

Your care team will be here to answer any questions and monitor your healing.

What Causes Anal Skin Tags?

Anal skin tags often appear when the skin around the anus is put under stress or irritation. Common culprits include:

  • Constipation: Straining too much during bowel movements.
  • Hemorrhoids: When swollen veins shrink, they can leave behind excess skin.
  • Pregnancy: Added pressure during pregnancy can lead to tags.
  • Diarrhea: Frequent wiping can irritate and stretch the skin.
  • Heavy lifting or exercise: Extra pressure in the area can trigger skin tags.

Can I Prevent Anal Skin Tags?

Preventing anal skin tags is all about taking care of your body and avoiding irritation in the area. Here are some easy tips to help:

  • Keep things moving: Stay hydrated, eat plenty of fiber, and don’t strain during bowel movements to prevent constipation.
  • Manage hemorrhoids: Treat them early to prevent skin stretching that can lead to tags.
  • Skip the heavy lifting: Try not to lift anything too heavy to reduce pressure on the anal area.
  • Be gentle: Clean the area carefully to avoid irritation or rubbing that can cause skin tags.

By making these small adjustments, you can help keep anal skin tags from coming back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are There Any Risks That Come With This Procedure?

Anal skin tag removal is generally safe, but there are some minor risks, including:

  • Infection: Rare, but can be minimized by following aftercare instructions.
  • Bleeding: Mild bleeding is common, but excessive bleeding is uncommon.
  • Scarring: Minimal, though some scarring may occur.
  • Discomfort: Mild pain is typical but manageable with over-the-counter meds.

Your doctor will guide you on how to avoid complications and ensure a smooth recovery.

How Are Anal Skin Tags Diagnosed?

Anal skin tags are diagnosed in a physical exam. If hemorrhoids (internal or external) are present, the patient will be referred for evaluation by a colo-rectal or gastrointestinal specialist.

How Can You Tell If You Have an Anal Skin Tag or Hemorrhoids?

It can be tricky to tell the difference between anal skin tags and hemorrhoids because they can feel similar. However, there are a few differences:

  • Anal Skin Tags: These are small, soft, flesh-colored growths that don’t typically hurt but may cause mild itching or irritation. They tend to stay the same size and are usually painless.
  • Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids can be swollen, painful, and often accompanied by itching, bleeding, or discomfort during bowel movements. They may feel like small lumps and can flare up and shrink over time.

If you're unsure, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Can Anal Skin Tags Come Back After Removal?

Yes, anal skin tags can come back after removal, especially if we don't address the underlying causes, like constipation, hemorrhoids, or frequent irritation. While the procedure removes existing skin tags, new ones may develop if the conditions that led to their formation continue.
