Lichen sclerosus is a rare condition that causes patients to develop patchy white skin that appears thinner than normal on the genital and anal areas. Anyone can develop Lichen sclerosus, but postmenopausal women are at higher risk. Lichen sclerosus can cause redness, mild to severe itching, pain, discomfort, blotches and wrinkles, painful sex and tearing or bleeding. It rarely improves without treatment and tends to recur, so follow-up treatments are common.
While there is no cure for Lichen sclerosus, treatment options are available. To improve symptoms, Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas offers patients MonaLisa Touch®. The treatment uses an advanced fractional CO2 laser to target the affected tissue (usually on the vulva – Labia minora and majora, perineum or perineal skin).
