Vaginal Rejuvenation Vs. Labiaplasty: What Is The Difference

The field of cosmetic gynecology is gaining increased popularity and momentum as women become more confident in speaking out about their bodies and complaints. Today, there are several procedures within the area of cosmetic gynecology that are helping women become more confident and improving sexual pleasure, including vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty. When first considering cosmetic vaginal surgery, it can be confusing to navigate the terminology involved, but as experts we can help!

Many women experience discomfort or just downright dissatisfaction when thinking about the appearance and function of the vagina and / or the vulva. Surgical procedures such as Vaginal Rejuvenation and Labiaplasty can help alleviate some of the symptoms or uncomfortable feelings. Depending on if you’re experiencing vaginal laxity, dissatisfaction with appearance, vaginal atrophy, or anything else when it comes to vaginal anatomy – there’s an option for you.

What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal relaxation (or loosening) can be caused by childbirth or the aging process (no thanks to gravity!), and can result in decreased sexual satisfaction.  Sexual gratification is directly related to the tension felt during penetration. Vaginal rejuvenation tightens the opening of the vagina and the vaginal canal, replacing any musculature and improving muscle tone and control. Women who seek vaginal rejuvenation may experience several indicators or symptoms including:

  • Decreased sensation and stimulation during sex
  • Gaping vaginal opening
  • Tampons fall out
  • Problems with bowel movements
  • “Gas-like” sounds during intercourse or “popping” sounds while walking produced from the vagina

Vaginal Rejuvenation surgery takes between one and two hours to perform and is done on an out-patient basis. You can return back to the comfort of your own bed (or hotel room for our traveling patients) that same night. You can schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss your complaints and goals with Dr. Brady in our all-female staffed office. She can help you determine the best plan of action and discuss the risks and alternatives available to you.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty procedures sculpt and/or reshape the labia. The size, shape and color vary significantly, and no vulva should ever be considered “abnormal”. However, there are some cases where the shape and size of the labia can interfere with regular activities. For instance, the labia may be elongated to the extent it can interfere with exercise or intercourse, and may even produce a bulge that prohibits some clothing choices. This can cause discomfort, and in some cases an unattractive “camel toe.”

When considering labiaplasty, there are many options to consider. First and foremost, which part of the labia are the major problem for you? Labiaplasty of the labia minora addresses the delicate inner labia (or “lips”), while Labiaplasty of the Labia Majora address the fattier outer labia where the pubic hair grows. Some patients also have dissatisfaction when it comes to the clitoral hood, or the skin that causes the clitoris to hang. Clitoral hood reduction, in addition to the aesthetic benefits, also places the clitoris at a more optimal location for increased sexual pleasure. Dr. Brady and our trained team can help you figure out which procedure is of interest to you and guide you through the next steps into a happier, more confident version of you.

Recovery & Additional Procedures

All of the cosmetic surgical procedures offered here at Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas are done on an outpatient basis. Initial recovery from both of these procedures usually includes staying in town for 24 hours for labiaplasty and about 3 days for vaginal rejuvenation surgeries. Additionally, pelvic rest restrictions will be in place for 6 weeks to ensure that your body has the time it needs to heal. Pelvic rest restrictions include no intercourse for 6 weeks (we’re sorry!), no soaking in water, and limiting physical activity (no aerobic activity or heavy lifting). You can discuss all the restrictions for the procedure of interest to you at your complimentary consultation with Dr. Brady.

Vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty are often performed in conjunction with each other or other cosmetic vaginal procedures. Additionally, women can now opt to have other cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentations, tummy tucks, liposuction and even their facial fillers done at the same time, an offering called The REAL Mommy Makeover. Dr. Brady partners with Dr. Farah Naz Khan to offer procedures at our private surgical suite or can combine procedures with another surgeon if you are scheduled elsewhere.

Dr. Wesley Anne Brady is a trained, board-certified, and experienced practitioner of cosmetic gynecology. Please feel free to contact us to set up a consultation to determine if one or both of these procedures is right for you!
