When it comes to monitoring your health, it can be difficult to determine what certain medical issues are stemming from, since so many health concerns can be traced to multiple culprits. One such source of medical concerns in your life may be a hormone imbalance, which can trigger the onset of several different types of conditions or side effects. Below, we’ve put together a brief list of five common health problems that you might have that could possibly be a result of hormone imbalances, which could be treated through hormone therapy.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
An overproduction of testosterone can lead to polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive androgens, ovarian cysts, and issues with infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods.
Skin Conditions
From acne to dry or unhealthy-looking skin, hormonal imbalance can have a role to play in health and appearance of your skin. Thyroid concerns can cause dry skin, while excessive progesterone can lead to unhealthy looking skin and excessive testosterone can lead to acne.
Reduced Sex Drive
While a reduced sex drive can occur for a number of reasons, one common reason is due to a hormonal imbalance. Improper cortisol levels, low estrogen levels, or low testosterone levels can each directly contribute to a reduction in libido. Many times, lowered sex drives are linked with the onset of menopause in female patients previously of a reproductive age.
Mood Swings
A variety of hormones can contribute to sudden shifts in a patient’s mood. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can lead to mood swings when adrenal glands are not secreting the hormone in the proper amounts or at the proper times. Estrogen can lead to sudden mood swings, due to either a lack of or an excess of the hormone.
Sleep Conditions
Feelings of lethargy and bouts of insomnia have both been linked to improperly balanced estrogen levels. Additionally, imbalanced progesterone and cortisol can lead to insomnia, feelings of a second wind during the evenings, groggy beginnings to every morning, or an inability to stay asleep.
Hormone therapy can be greatly beneficial in addressing these conditions.
